Joel Cole is a Faroese American who has traveled to and lived in the Faroe Islands for nearly 40 years. His work addresses the human condition and incoporates materials, including wood, obtained from his native Minnesota River Valley. His art studio is located in an abandoned NATO base high in the mountains, just north of the Faroese capital, Tórshavn. He lives in a small sea-side village with his wife and three children; his two older children live in America.
